There have probably been worse played games of football but you'd have to spend a bit of time scoring through in the AFL archives to find them. It was the sort of game you don't usually see until the final weeks of the season, between two down on their luck clubs whose supporters are bravely holding out until the sweet release of September frees them from their pain. The Fremantle supporters arrived full of optimism, expecting it to be the easy win that kick started their season. They were quickly rebuked as the Dockers set about proving themselves worthy of 17th position, with the same poor skills, lack of run and seemingly no idea where they were supposed to be at any given moment on full display. Carlton played a very Carlton like game, which was the only positive for Fremantle. Unfortunately, Carlton's incompetence wasn't enough to get Fremantle over the line and the Dockers were still downed by 4 points. As if being no wins after five weeks wasn't bad enough, Fremantle had salt rubbed into the wound - with a series of actual wounds. Fyfe, Johnson and Ballantyne all copped various injuries to their leg, with the unofficial medical diagnosis of Fyfe being that his leg is rooted.
Fremantle lost by 4 points.
