It was a God awful small affair. Two teams who hope had deserted, a gale blowing that wasn't far from being given a woman's name, a crowd that could fit inside Ross Lyon's money bin, pelting rain and not a Fyfe or Hill to be seen. Expecting the game to be a tight tussle between two lowly teams in tough conditions, Fremantle wasted their opportunity to kick with Cyclone Shannon in the first quarter, putting through just one goal despite the ball just needing to be airborne to travel the length of the ground. Richmond didn't make the same mistake in the second quarter, getting out to a 6 goal lead and leaving the brave Fremantle supporters with one option - to pray for lightning. The Dockers put up a mild fightback in the third term to position themselves for a face saving moderate loss but they couldn't sustain the effort and Richmond pulled their pants down in the last quarter to win by 48 points.
Fremantle lost by 38 points.
