The word heroic is thrown around a lot during the ANZAC Day round but on this occasion it's seems an apt description after Shane Kersten kicking the winning goal in a last minute thriller at Subiaco Oval. Heroic in the sense that it will be heroic if the North Melbourne players are prepared to show their faces in Melbourne after one of the biggest chokes since Marlon Brando died trying to eat an entire extra from The Island of Doctor Moreau. Fremantle kicked just two goals in opening half, with the Kangaroos getting out to a 5 goal lad in the third quarter. Freo had pegged it back to 15 points by three quarter time but it was hard to see where they were going to get the goals from to run North Melbourne down. But get them they did. They fought and scrapped their way into the lead, before losing it again. Then, with 40 seconds left on the clock, a casual Shane Kersten wandered over to a loose football in the pocket, casually picked it up and then snapped a goal from Row G. The crowd went mad and Brad Scott promised to reimburse the ground management for the damage he did.
Fremantle won by 5 points.
