Fremantle's season got off to a big of a bumpy start after they found themselves being taken apart by Geelong, who appear to have miscalculated when the Grand Final will be held this year. Things looked like they were going to play out quite well at the start of the game, a fast pace, albeit slightly rusty Fremantle with a few options up forward were giving the Cats the run around before the backline downed tools and let Geelong waltz out to a handy lead, which quickly became a shellacking. For much of the game Fremantle looked liked there had been some confusion over summer about who was the backline coach and who was the forward line coach, with the forward line full of blokes getting in each other's way and the backline nice and open. The game was done by three quarter time and many supporters headed home early to cheer themselves up by watching a replay of one of the women's team losses, but Freo kicked on in the last quarter to keep things relatively respectable on the scoreboard.
In better news, Shane Kirsten put his hand up to give Zac Dawson a rest as the designated scapegoat, Michael Johnson was pleased that someone else was there to pull his pants down for a change and Stephen Hill schooled his brother on who's town this is.
Fremantle lost by 42 points.
