Fremantle arrived in Geelong to play a game they shouldn't have been able to win. They left after playing a game they never should have lost. You can almost call the result of a Fremantle away game in the opening five minutes. They're either on or they are very much not. After a week to think about what they'd done in Brisbane, it was clear that Fremantle's most important players were on at Kardinia Park. They were loving the space, getting their hands on the ball and their skills were in good shape. If they club had been able to organise a forward line structure over the past three months then they would have been a dozen goals up by half time. Unfortunately that's not the case yet so they were only a lazy 4 goals up. Even then, it would have been a few more if they'd thought to tighten up the defenses in the closing minute of the second quarter. Geelong weren't comfortable with where things were headed though and mounted a second quarter comeback. It wasn't much but with Fremantle seeming to play a ghost at full forward - one only they could see and who was unable to take a contested mark, Geelong scragged their way back into the contest and eventually into the lead. Fremantle looked likely to snatch the win, with some beautiful play around the ground but their forward line remained unable to get forward or remain in a line and they fell just short, going down by 2 points.
Fremantle lost by 42 points.
