It was a beautiful afternoon for a game of football and Fremantle and Port Adelaide produced a pretty good impression of one in the opening half. A few good passages of play, some nice goals and a minimal about of buggering about with the ball on the ground. Then halfway through the third quarter the whole thing exploded into a flurry of high marks, dazzling runs and brilliant goals as Fremantle lit up and Port Adelaide caught fire in the resulting blaze. Michael Barlow was transformed, like an incredible hulk who grew just enough for his shirt to ride up a bit, rather than ripping entirely, picking up 43 possessions and kicking a couple of goals, Pavlich put Matt Taberner back in his box, with a lazy 4 goals and Chris Mayne had a crack for mark of the year. It was brilliant football as the lead swung one way then the other and back again. In the end it was Fremantle's superior accuracy in front of goals that got them over the line, having got all the shockers out of their system in the first half of the season. The win sets up a big game at the MCG next week, when Fremantle challenge Collingwood for the much coveted 14th spot on the ladder.
Fremantle won by 17 points.
