Ross Lyon has often pushed the point of view that personnel doesn’t really matter with his style of football and at no point in the season does that become truer than in a Derby. Fremantle could send out a fleet of wheelie bins in purple jumpers and they’d still go in favourites for a win over the Eagles, with very short odds on keeping the Eagles scoreless for at least one quarter. Unfortunately the AFL has an exclusive contract with a company that makes non-wheelie bins so we’ll never get to see that happen, what we do get in the next best thing - a near full strength Fremantle playing whoever the Eagles could find that was prepared to pull on the yellow jumper and stand on the same paddock as Nic Naitanui. The near part of the full strength comes from a bit of trouble Hayden Ballantyne got into with Geelong a few years ago, resulting in a mandatory suspension every time he plays against them. So he’s out and the usual suspects are onto the extended bench to cover for him - Hayden Crozier, Tendai Mzungu, Max Duffy, Jack Hannath. The Eagles have brought in Sam Butler, Brant Colledge, Josh Hill, Fraser McInnes - who are apparently all AFL listed footballers.
