There are a lot of people who continue to sing the praises of the one and only Daniel Gilmore. He may just be one of those players that some people warm to and whatever they do is fine. Or he might be like a "be on me next start" type of race horse which continually show glimpses of ability that makes you believe they're worth following, I don't know. All I do know is that more times than not those horses' highest and best use are usually sitting on the shelf in aisle five in the pet food section of the local supermarket.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't want to put the protective shielding curtains up and have him put down with a shotgun but for the life of me I am struggling to see the reason for all this praise.

Personally I have seen him play one good game and that was last year when he pinched hit in the ruck and got away with it probably because he rarely had an opponent around the ground and the opposition didn't expect that rucking move and couldn't rectify the situation on the day. I've since seem him threaten to repeat passages of that level of play but rarely have I seen him complete it.

He is a bloke that can run and to date, if we're fair dinkum, that's pretty much it. If you watch him closely, he seemingly performs the double take glance when he goes to pick the loose ball up to see if he is going to get hit. Now I am not saying he is soft because I don't believe he is. I think he is looking to see what is coming so he can try and avoid it to be off and gone.  Now if this is so, he often spends it before he's collected it and then has to go back and get it. Regularly he goes from obtaining a loose ball get under zero pressure to producing a clanger under pressure. Now for some reason his supporters claim he performs "magnificent second efforts." I'm all for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th efforts but if it's because you buggered it up the first time when you weren't under pressure then your 2nd efforts shouldn't be required.

How often has Gilmore gotten hold of the ball, taken off and sprinted down the ground looking like a superstar but then seemingly has some sort of brain snap, panics and runs dead bang into trouble? It's like he's gotten the ball and then someone has shouted, "200 Killer Wasps"

I love players trying to run the ball and break the lines and it's what we're in desperate need of but if you can't do it while being constructive, thinking on your feet and playing to your team's advantage then you're more times than not going to turn it over and then get caught out on the rebound. Maybe he needs to settle first before trying to perform what the likes of David Wojcinski does for Geelong and Jake King is doing for Richmond. He had 15 possessions on the weekend and for someone who is held in such regard in certain circles he has to pick it up. Maybe he needs to sink the left foot into it after taking a short sharp run and put it 60+ metres down the ground to a fifty fifty a few times to get some confidence. Again I'm not sure but if he has the ability that many believe then he has to start displaying it.

Players who can carry the ball, run with a bit of pace and kick predominantly on the left foot get a great deal more latitude than that of a right footed player who has pace and carries the ball. The raking left foot is a genuine weapon but it can also be a mesmerising illusion.

I am not launching into D.Gilmore as I hope he does possess and can constantly bring to the surface the ability he suggests he may have but I am curious of where this hype and praise for him comes from given what he has displayed so far. For mine in his career to date, he reminds me of a Brendan Fewster or to a lesser degree a Ryan Murphy, genuine WAFL superstars but only AFL pinch hitters.

Sometimes a Happy Gilmore is a great story and spectacle but unfortunately the Shooter McGavins are more reliable over a longer period of time.
