TOPIC: Erasmus

Watched him in the WAFL, spoke to people I trust and in the know with PSA football. This guy has got it. What's going on with him?

I know he took a knock last game and was subbed out. What is stopping him playing senior football, he's another Sam Sturt.

We continue to play Johnson and O'Meara to the detriment of Erasmus and Brodie. Surely they will ask for a trade ate the end of the year.

Jaeger O'meara.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I haven't seen him play much in the WAFL, but I think a few things have hurt Erasmus.

The first is Fyfe has been good for us and playing in the middle. There's one spot fewer for Ras to come in.

To date, we've had very few injuries in the midfield. In a normal year you'd expect one of Brayshaw, Serong or Young to have copped an injury of some sort, but they've been incredibly durable.

I don't think Johnson has been good, but he shows something in every game. It might be a fend off, a good second effort, holding the ball waiting for a second and better option. You can see there is something there, even if it hasn't amounted to much in terms of output. Contrast this with Erasmus when he played, and there was a lot of 'not much'. I don't think he's been given a fair chance, but when he has had a chance nothing has jumped of the park.

The last is JLo sticking with O'Meara. I'm not sure I'm quite with JLo on this one. There is probably a complicated team balance argument there, but I feel like that's the spot where Erasmus could have come in.

Hypen he may be a great talent but what’s he like at ticking boxes?

Morgan, that's what developing players is about. They don't always play well in the early days. I think Johnson can be as good as Cripps. I think he's a bloody superstar in the making. He's been told to be a game breaker and its starting to happen. Ten kilos on Johnson. Goodnight folks. Watch him next year. They don't let them in the gym proper till fourth pre-season in.

I think if Erasmus was given an opportunity he would be the guy that gets better every week. As opposed to O'Meara who is just okay every week and doesn't run well at all when they have the ball.

I think Erasmus would be the perfect swap for O'Meara and I just for the life of me can't see why its not happening. I just don't get why.

Despite what I said on another thread about JOM being pretty good for us this year, I am torn when it means Erasmus is starved of AFL experience.

Fully concur with Hypen re Johnson: he's definitely got it and goes better when he gets time on the inside.

I hope we can persuade Erasmus his future is with Freo - I'm sure there will be opportunities elsewhere.

Eramus has obviously been blamed for the last derby loss.

He should have been played against Richmond and Hawks with Omeara and Fyfe have one rest before the back end of the season. Then he showed something then manage Johnson for a game before the finals also.

And then lo and behold, we may have a back-up ready to roll if god forbid one of our mids has an injury.

Ok, this isn't definitive, and I like Erasmus. But my take is he is slow with ball in hand, and he takes speed off the ball when involved in a chain. Two pretty critical things for AFL. In particular this year at WAFL I have seen him stop regularly when marking in space, to look for the next option. This in itself isn't criminal, but the instinct to know that he is free and can go should be there. His decision making otherwise is good, but the speed to make the decision needs work.

I suspect faster decision comes with more experience at the highest level. Slogging away for Peel won't help there.

Hard to adjust when you're mostly the sub when you get selected.

You don't think Johnson has been good Morgan? I just hope we have him on a long contract because losing him would be worse than losing Acres and Henry combined. His ability to take an extra second and spot the better option is just great. He is really strong.
And I like the way he hates disposing of the ball until he is being tackled...

Morgan has Johnson somewhere between Meek and Zac Dawson.

How long you got?

I too think that Erasmus should be playing and I agree that the obvious spot for him is the one O'Meara holds. I think though that O'Meara gives JLo flexibility (can swing in too defence etc) and that's probably why he prefers him at the moment. Just hope he stays at the end of the year.
As for Johnson, he's gonna be very good. Mundy 2.0

Perhaps his instinct has been coached out of him. For most of the season when we play carp our blokes look like witches hats looking for the next hat to rack up a stat.

A bit of gun and run has come late in the season.

The WC are a case in point, Schofield brought a bit more grit and dare to their game. That’s what folk want to see an exciting game. I don’t care if we lose taking the game on and playing good young talent.
