With the AFL looking at giving clubs the ability to match Picks of Academy and Father/son draftees at any stage of the draft this year, do we have any like prospects. I know the Weagles are keen on Academy prospect Malakai Champion and father/son Bailey Banfield, son of Drew, but do we have some options who we may match bids for.

Just a correction Gumnut. Bailey is not the son of Drew he is the son of Rob and Deb Banfield. No relation.

There's not really much of interest for Freo in the current year's NGA. The only one who's pushed to be a very rough draft smokey is Ryan Bizzell but even then, it's probably been the last couple of months of showing some talent and still pretty much no chance of getting drafted other than by us if we open a Cat B rookie spot. The club will likely keep Draper and Williams as Cat B rookies. It's difficult to know who exactly is in Freo's NGA academy as the club website only has some names for this year but the below I know are in our NGA for next season.

The 2025 draft as a whole is a different scope with Fred Rodriguez and Basil Hart looking very good as I mentioned a few weeks back, along with the WA side expected to be quite strong. There's a fair bit of talent from the West expected to feature in the draft next year so not a bad one to have draft capital in if we move picks forward.

Rodriguez impressed big time throughout the U18 Championships as a bottom age player and is a likely top 10 chance at this stage. It's one reason apart from Warner that I'd like at least 1 of our first-round draft picks moved to next season, to either match or get ahead of a bid.

Hart was a jet at the U16's championships last year but has been a little up and down this year. He won AA selection for his u16 performances though and should feature highly for WA at the u18 championships next season. A mid-size forward with elite speed and skills could be exactly what we're after if he continues to develop.

Another one to look out for who we are just short of having rights to is Troy Longmuir's son Taj who was great at the u16 champs and has played some good footy off half back and pushing into the midfield this year.

Edit: One I forgot to mention but managed to get a game for WA in their last u18 championships game as am underager is Toby Whan who has been very impressive in the colts. He's another NGA who has rocketed up draft boards this year and could feature highly in next seasons draft. The new NGA matching rules could be incredibly good for Freo next season.

It's a very strong draft and right now we've got a pick inside ten with another two inside twenty and another one inside twenty five.

There is an opportunity to be strong for the next fifteen years. Beware the Tim Kelly paradigm.

I'd be disappointed if we blew half of that on Liam Baker.

I'd be disappointed if we blew any on Baker. Much prefer Warner if it's possible.

After the conclusion of the u18 Championships on the weekend, a whole host of draft rankings have been updated for July. The consensus seems to be that this is the deepest draft in a long time with the top 30 picks all over the place and difficult to order. Most years you'll have players in tiers/clumps and know pretty clearly where in the draft they will fall however this year that doesn't seem to apply. The top 10 is still very subjective and differs from draft expert to draft expert with most having a high level of talent you could argue will see them drafted earlier.

Firstly, we have Twomey's top 30 who is normally the most astute to club land. He speaks the most with club recruiters and understands what they're looking for and who they rate the best. He tends to be a pretty accurate predictor of where kids will fall in the draft or how clubs are seeing things.

Next we have a site that is dedicated to reporting and scouting junior talent in Rookie Me Central's top 30. They tend do provide very good analysis of players and how they are developing along with how they compare to one another. They provide a more in depth look at the draft talent available, their weaknesses, strengths, progress and arguably have the most combined knowledge on these kids and their performances.

Lastly, we have ESPN's draft rankings. They tend to have a more wholistic approach based on a large number of different sources to gather their rankings. A few of their draft experts have quite a good eye for talent and they are generally on the money.

If you look at each of these top 30's after the championships, you'll see a lot of players vary greatly with each ranking having separate no1 picks and very different top 3's, top 5's and top 10 selections. This might be one of the best years to hold 3 first round draft picks as well as another in the early to mid 20's. The only caveat is that there's not really any West Aussies available except Bo Allan. However, there's plenty of talented kids and a lot of Vic Country kids who have always done well heading over to Perth. It should be a very exciting time come the October/November trade and draft period.

Sorry stella, I wasn't referring to our boy Bailey who has family in Broome I believe, but Drew Banfield's young boy at Claremont. He has 2 sons playing for Claremont colts, the older Bailey 19yo who is a bit of a star at that level and a younger brother Charlie 17yo who I think has been mentioned as an Eagles father/son prospect as well. Interestingly all 3 spent time at Swanbourne Junior footy club according to WAFL site
Looking at this year's draft Biz with it being a strong group, would it be worth say keeping a couple of picks to get Bo Allen and the best of Vic Country kids and trade the rest away for future first rounders to make a play for Warner if he's still a desired target.

No love for Luke Urquhart Biz? Getting a bit taller and stronger, feels like he would improve important skills in an AFL environment. Unfortunately from the Sharks, so I guess that's an issue.

Watching Urquhart before the championships, I thought he was a class above everyone in the colts. He had great power and ball winning in the contest but was also damaging up forward using his size and clean marking to dominate defenders. He was my prediction as a draft bolter once more people on the East coast saw what he could do against their sides in the championships.

While he did still win plenty out of the middle and was a key member of the midfield who was probably best on ground in the first couple of championship games, his disposal deteriorated and he turned the ball over a bit too much. I still think he's very much in the 40-60 draft range and wouldn't be unhappy grabbing him with a late pick if we had one but I think his disposal would have hurt his draft standing. He still has time to go back to the colts and show that he can improve his disposal because the rest of his game is very strong.

There's a hint of Chad Warner about him in that he was a big bodied ball winner in his draft year who had question marks on his disposal. If Urquhart can show the same endeavour to improve and work on it, he could be a very good acquisition.

So Twomey has Bo Allan at number 10 in his Phantom Draft post today. I'd be inclined to trust his judgement and use one of our first round picks on him, what do you think Biz? Seems to have attributes that we would like in our squad.

Allan was impressive in his championship games as a hard tackling, big bodied clearance midfielder and has been following that up with Peel in the WAFL seniors but on a half back flank. He's a big midfielder with explosive pace but his disposal is a bit suspect. His long kicking is fine but when trying to hit shorter targets under little pressure, he can fluff his kicks which probably drops his projections as a player.

I actually think his disposal has been better at Peel the past couple of weeks where he seems to have had some feedback about his kicking and is working on being a bit more deliberate and smoother in his disposal. Hopefully he can continue to improve those skills because there is so much to like about the rest of his game. He's great overhead, has fantastic speed off the mark and loves to be aggressive. That's not just aggression at the man when he's tackling but both in taking tackles on, breaking them and being someone who breaks lines with constant aggressive play to move the ball forward.

I could see him slotting into half back straight away next season if he improves his disposal enough as at 191cm and with a proper pre-season, he'll be a big boy early. I wouldn't be unhappy grabbing him with one of our picks but I can see him slipping through the teens although I doubt he'd get past the OOFTIT's 2nd pick around the early 20's.
