It's taken a shift again, hasn't it? A couple of three week penalties that probably weren't warranting three weeks, three weeks ago.

I was really annoyed listening to Brown and Buckley watching On The Couch last night. " The game as we know it is being stolen "....."it's all heading in the wrong direction". Usual stuff that gets trotted out every time the game changes. Was really disappointed that neither mentioned the welfare of Tarranto and Duggan.

The change resistance piece is, "how do we coach our players". Players can't adjust. Well players adjust real quick. In fact coaches, the dozens of them are flat out exploiting rule changes in real time. All they have to do is not bring a player to ground, if that means the tackled placed gets broken easier, well good times then.

To the AFL, if Brad Sheppard or Joe Dulce, places a claim on the AFL during the week, can they like communicate that they are panicking and tell the clubs.

I can foresee no tackling and no bumping in the future... geez, we'd might as well be playing soccer...

it's a long and boring read
The government has been busy looking after us all.
Don't think issues like "integrity of the game", "player opinions", "viewers opinions" featured in the discussion. Mostly doctors, lawyers and researchers putting their two bobs worth in.
Maybe Foxtel could stream a bit of Gaza or Russia v Ukraine to give this stuff some context. Probably should not say that.

After looking at these outcomes last weekend my takeaway for down the track is that ruckmen must never drive in a tackle again, or they are gorn. I have seen multiple ruckmen this season, including ours, crunch opposition in the direction of their tackle. Somehow they must look to stay upright to work against momentum and power to weight ratios. And these are ruckmen. There's a reason you shouldn't handball to them.

The Taranto/Bedford incident looked quite innocuous and an everyday tackle, but concussion result-three weeks. Meanwhile Rosas runs past Port player and deliberately elbows him in the head. No concussion-1 week.

Perplexed.

The AFL is quietly freaking out about the prospect of law suits on the horizon and those currently running.

Uncharted legal territory and presumably the AFL doesn’t want to just meet its standard of care since that’s undetermined, but wants to exceed it so their legal obligations are well and truly met.

What needs to change is the notion that the tackle needs to be this all encompassing action that prohibits ball disposal.

A tackle should be a prompt for the player to dispose of the ball. Won't that serve congestion really well?

Can't we start at the end here? CRT must be eliminated at all costs.

Change the game.

Just tackle pinning both arms but stay upright - do not fling to the ground.

The problem with changing the game is that it's a culture issue and no one new ever enters the culture. Almost every role that could make change is filled by someone who has been an AFL player and avoided standing out from the group. The recruitment of new players involves looking for someone who matches someone who's already in the system.

You look at the AFLW and there is such a huge diversity of people, then you look at the AFL and it's 90% the same person.

I don't know why not more footballers wear helmets before they are concussed.

Simply stated helmets do not prevent concussion. link
"While helmets do not prevent a brain injury, they do reduce the risk of a structural brain injury by as much as 85%. Helmets also do reduce the risk severe physical injuries to your head such as a skull fracture, along with other structural damage that can occur in brain injuries. On the other hand, helmets do not prevent injury to the brain or brain functionality such as concussion, or closed head injuries. "
The American experience was that giving grid iron players a helmet encouraged them to use their heads as battering rams and actually increased the risk of head injury.

It's annoying that so many commentators, players, past players and fans across the AFL landscape do not see the bigger picture. We know the lawsuits are in from Liam Picken, Brad Sheppard etc, but there are 100+ other lawsuits in the pipeline that will bankrupt the AFL if the Courts determine that the AFL knew of the problem and did too little to fix it. No doubt their Insurers are already threatening to bail out. That it what is driving change. We will have no Australian Football League in a professional sense unless the game changes.

Get on board and support the changes. Tackles are okay, but you better not cause a concussion because that is prima facie evidence that you made a dangerous tackle. The standing tackle is the future, there is no need to sling, drive or otherwise bring a player's head into hard contact with the ground.

The difficulty with Bedford and Cameron is that you have to penalise actions and not consequences. Both tackles were completely textbook and legal and there was no other reasonable course of action open to the player (other than just let the opponent run away). There has to be a reasonable, teachable alternative otherwise the penalty is just arbitrary punishment of accidents, regardless of action or intent. Three weeks suspension for Cameron doesn't help Duggan get over his concussion or prevent the next similar accident.
I think the AFL has done well to identify and mostly eliminate the sling tackles and the actions which are intended to hurt an opponent, but unless we are going to convert into a non-contact sport, then there will always be some (voluntarily assumed by participants) risk of concussion. In fact even basketballers and netballers sometimes get concussed accidentally.
I was once hit on the head by a stray shot at goal when I was in the crowd at Subi. It hurt. But that doesn't mean shots at goal should result in suspensions if the ball hits someone.
