Honestly, now I feel bad that we take money off them and don't give them the sponsorship for free.

So is it an imbroglio or a conundrum we are dealing with here?

Every year Freo's admin send around a member survey containing what feels like a million questions. If they really wanted to know how Freo's members felt about this (or any other) sponsorship there is/was a chance to ask them. Unfortunately, asking the members how they feel about Woodside presupposes that there is a potential issue, which the sponsors wouldn't like. Both Woodside and Freo would probably prefer not to know. So they won't ask. It's Clayton's engagement in service of the sponsors rather than the members.

Edit: Oh wait, I just checked my email and saw the new members survey, and it includes a question about "the alignment between sponsors and the Fremantle Football Club."

I feel like I might have willed this into existence.

You'd think Fremantle will win the flag next year.

I just completed the survey Morgan. I raised the sponsorship by Woodside as an issue.

I could be fair to Woodside and say that they are operating within the existing rules, so there is no problem. But then I remember that Woodside and companies like them spend an awful lot of money influencing the people who make the rules. And then I feel a bit of despair.

Is this why they held over membership fees; this is what you get with fruitful sponsorship deals?

RR, what if we took their sponsorship money, and used it to influence the people who make the AwFL rules. Would that make you feel better?

You’ve got me Hypen, I’m now getting all emotional about the matter and will send the club a message about how taking the Woodside corporate emblem off our kit asap will save the world, and I’ve also asked the elderly neighbour on a disability pension to ditch her gas cylinders used for cooking and heating and find another way to survive.

Vive la revolution!

I have to roll my eyes when I hear people saying that Australia is a small player when it comes to its contributions to climate change and that big players like China and the US make us irrelevant. Don’t they know where China gets its gas and coal from? It’s like blaming cocaine fuelled crime on addicts and ignoring the suppliers.

Looks like Freo’s involvement has captured some additional attention:

The other thing Walter is if you aggregate the tail of emitters; those less than three percent emissions, you get a third of the world's emissions.

Everyone one of those 35 or so countries are on board except two countries. Us being one. The other being Afghanistan.

Walter, China has other LNG suppliers, and Woodside, while the largest, isn't the only Australian supplier (Chevron, Shell, Woodside, Santos, INPEX and Origin Energy.) So if Woodside were miraculously cancelled overnight, China would feel little more than an economic ripple before arranging extra supplies from Turkmenistan, Russia and mostly the U.S. But they would then be using inferior grade material (inferior to Australian supplies) and therefore producing more carbon emissions.
So not a rtealistically good result?

Grandpa, think of the geo political impact of a war in Durkadurkastan and how that will impact crude oil prices.

I’ll stick with my cocaine analogy Grandpa. What you are suggesting is that we shouldn’t shut down a cocaine dealer because he would simply be replaced by another dealer who provides inferior white powder. I’d rather we gradually worked towards getting rid of all them one at a time.

What if we don't set such lofty goals for a football club but just ask them to try and do the right thing sometimes.

Save the Planet Round is going to be so awkward.

I feel the club is grappling with its identity. It was set up in defiance of the corporate drudgery that was West Coast. Freo were genius in their inception marketing. They brought people across from West Coast in a premiership year. The jumper in every way was not conventional; that was the point.

Here we are twenty five years later, playing in a bland colour mixed with white, sponsored by a corporate giant who represents everything most of us despise and we sit there in our seats supporting our team wearing a Yakka jumper featuring colours that our club don't even wear any more.

Who are you these days, Fremantle?
