The mid season draft has snuck up on me.

Apologies if I’ve missed posts about our situation, but the following article indicates we have one spot available (along with a list of mostly Victorian possible draftees)
Are we using our pick? Any indications of who we might go for?

I believe we have one pick. Peter Bell said we have a wish list and we'll get best available from that list. No preference of position, just the best player. Some local, some from elsewhere. If nobody from our list is available by our pick, we'll pass. Didn't know what number pick (interview was before 5p.m. yesterday)

They are talking up Robert Hansen Jnr from Subiaco.

Sonny prototype.

Robert Hansen Jr
Subiaco, WAFL
MID/FWD, 180cm, 70kg

Hansen is a wonderfully balanced footballer, light on his feet with a polished left foot and loads of goal nous. His most eye-catching moments have come as a small forward where he often makes something out of nothing for the Lions, but he's also shown ability up the ground on a wing and can impact games through different avenues. Fremantle has shown keen interest in the Indigenous talent who's nominated for the draft under an 18-month contract.

Is this bad news for Liam Henry? He's long been considered a likely replacement for Sonny but doesn't seem to have seized his chances.

The bad news for Liam Henry was when he didn't explode to be an instant superstar like Kysiah Pickett and most of the footy world wrote him off pretty quickly.

I find this mid-season draft a ridiculous concept.

Pilfering other leagues and potentially premiership teams within those leagues of their star player/s half way through the season only to more-than-likely plonk those players into a different understudy league team. I'm not sure of any money compo the pilfered team gets, but it could wipe out chances of a flag or, at the very least, ruin team structure and planning strategies. Do you think those "lesser league" clubs feel like they exist only to produce players for the AFL?

It destroys opportunity as much as it creates. I'd argue more than. And I don't think footy is better for it.

I hope we pass on our pick. There's no one below AFL level that seems particularly exciting or would push our best 22 let alone the kids developing at Peel who can't get a look in. Leave the list spot for the national draft at the end of the year considering we're relatively injury free.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

And this.

Fremantle were the first to get in touch, with Port Adelaide, North Melbourne, Richmond and Hawthorn all following suit, as well as West Coast, where he was part of their Next Generation Academy.

Hansen Jr said it was “pretty cool” to hear from the Dockers, but is prepared to go anywhere in the country to live out his AFL dream.

“I go for Freo,” he said.

“They were the first ones to call too, to have Freo ring me up, I’ve been going for them my whole life so that was pretty cool.

“Watching them every week and cheering them on and thinking that I could maybe be playing with them one day, that would be unreal.

“I’ll move anywhere though, I just want to be living my dream.”

He's won me over, pick Rob today.
I was previously all for Jack Buller and I'd still like to have him in Purple, but apart from the fact he may already be heading east, our tall forwards are all clicking at the moment and are definitely the way to go for rest of season while big Jack has opted for a 6 month contract which makes it hard to see him making an impact and a wasted pick.
Does anyone know what length contract Rob is chasing?

18 months. Which is fair enough I think. Some form of security.

Silence Mushroom!

You take kid this kid Hansen, Wallsy. Keep using the mid-season draft each winter coming into spring. He'll take a while to bloom but just think like this:

Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant anyone of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It's a secret no-one knows
It's a secret no-one knows.

Given we have virtually no high end picks in the end of year draft it might be sensible to use the MSD to pick up someone now?

If we can't get Jr, then we may as well pass...
