TOPIC: To tank or not to tank?

With GWS's draft concessions officially over, it's time to resume that time honoured AFL tradition ... tanking.

With their season all but gone it will be interesting to see how badly Carlton tank from here on in.

With their billionaire poker machine benefactor (Bruce Mathieson) pulling the strings, look to Owen(4) Malthouse surviving this season at least, Mark LoGiudice becoming the new president and CEO Greg Swann moving on.

If they are true to their recently announced rebuild mantra, attention will shift to their player list management.

Enter Bryce Gibbs. Former no.1 draft pick and out of contract restricted free agent at the end of the season. Do they re-sign him or let him walk? The smart money is on the latter. A rebuild process is a long term strategy with the fruits of success many years away.

Do they pay a player like Gibbs $800k/season when they don't expect any great on field success or do they let him walk?

If they let him go and don't attempt to replace him with another free agent, the AFL will reward them with a compensation pick. Gibbs would attract a first round compensation pick but where that pick falls depends upon their finishing position on the ladder (you receive the next pick after your first pick).

So for example, if the Blues finish low enough to get the no.3 pick they would receive the no.4 pick as compensation for losing Gibbs.

This year's draft is viewed as being 'good' with a larger than usual supply of quality 'talls'. Two very high picks in this draft should be very advantageous to any rebuilding club.

Don't expect the Blues to win too many games this season.

You mean they haven't been tanking? Crikey. They are really, really terrible at running a football club.

Tanking season doesn't officially open until after the first second full moon of the season (I forgot about the early start this year). Carlton must have been using the old guidelines ... you're right, they are really, really terrible at running a football club.

Bit hard for them to turn around say say we will play the kids.. they havent got many. Only 15 players on their list under the age of 24 or something.

Losing Gibbs is probably the best thing that will happen to them, as long as it isnt freo who is playing the 800k price tag apparently being thrown around. I havent seen a game of his in recent times, or ever, where he would justify more than 500k per season. So if Adelaide are happy to pay overs for him, let them do so.

Anyone named Bryce belongs in the same place as that mixed tape they played during the breaks at the game on Sunday (and the dude/dudette who put it together).

Bryce, 1927, vika and linda, hunters and collectors, police...

It's like a teenager in the early nineties trying to set the mood for sex after visiting the local chicken treat store. Hardly inspirational.

Keep them all far, far away from where Freo are playing footy.

And tanking worked so well for Carlton the first time, didn't it? Five years of being crap on purpose, followed by five more years of just being crap.

Mushroom, have you been reading my diary again?
Because, as we discussed, "finding out what you wanted for your birthday" is not a adequate reason.
(ps. the answer is always: Pearl Jam, Chicken roll with chips, and Courtney Cox)

Cis..., do they really have an alternative?

They have an ageing, overpaid, limited talent list that is going nowhere. The draft is their only hope of salvation.

Finishing as low as possible on the ladder and then moving on a star player or two has dual benefits: access to multiple high draft picks; and under the 'weighted rule' draw now in place, a soft draw next season (a la the Slime) to at least give themselves a chance to move up the ladder whilst their rebuild takes shape.

Reckon we're seeing the results of the compromised drafts in a few teams this season while barring injuries GC and GWS will go from strength to strength.

GWS are an interesting case.

They have a surfeit of tall forwards and we haven't yet seen their 'once in a generation' forward Tom Boyd.

They still lack midfield depth, amongst other things and the rest of the league will surely try to pry a few of those tall forwards away in the next year or two. Hopefully we'll have our 'due diligence' font working overtime in that area.

I hate the word tanking. In footy history there have been maybe a couple of clubs who have deliberately lost games. That is real tanking, and it is incredibly rare. Yet people trot out the term every time a team sucks. In footy, as in life, one should always remember Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Carlton has such a poor grasp of its list, that if they put out blokes there were certain couldn’t play, they'd probably win.

As for GC/GWS, they have so many good young players, it's scary. If they have any deficiencies in their lists they will easily be able to trade their way around them. What will be interesting is the salary cap. They were given an increased cap and huge numbers of draft picks, but in a year or two they will have squads choc-full of talent, but with the same (or at least similar) cap as everyone else. Very few of their players grew up on the Gold Coast or Western Sydney, and many would think a move back home for more pay/better lifestyle/more opportunities might not seem like a bad idea.
