Fremantle's young guns owe it to captain Matthew Pavlich and the club's other older stars to build the depth needed to give them a crack at a premiership before their careers come to an end, according to forward Chris Mayne.
Pavlich, who has resisted rival overtures to remain loyal to the Dockers for 13 seasons, became the highest AFL goal kicker for a WA-based player with a bag of five in a 29-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday.
His 517 goals eclipsed the 514 kicked by dual West Coast premiership hero Peter Sumich, who is now an assistant coach at Fremantle.
Mayne admitted the Dockers had relied on Pavlich for too long and too heavily, and with the Western Bulldogs headed for Patersons Stadium on Sunday, he believed a victory to keep Fremantle's finals hopes alive was vital.
