There was a bloke on the tele who used to reckon a week was a long time in football. He’s not always wrong. A week ago, Carlton were thought to be a dominant force in the football world, destined to meet the Hawks in a grand final of epic proportions. Then they were given a touch up by James Hird’s mob and returned to being the flaky millionaires' club with a defense that had more holes in it than the combined nasal cavities of the 2006 AFL premiership side. Fremanlte on the other hand are building a nice solid foundation to launch themselves into September and expect Carlton to provide some nice formwork.

Usually good for a win, last year Fremantle’s injury crisis saw Carlton sneak past them late in the season when the team played their only match, in Round 21. Carlton looked like a team excited by the approaching build up to the finals and a crack at a flag, the Dockers looked like all they wanted was a tree to bleed under and a dog to lick their wounds. Fremantle's long, injury plagued seasons looked to have taken it's toll on the players, shy of a length all day, lacking enough confidence to throw a few choice bits of play together and generally out gunned at ever endeavour. The Blues lairising in front of goals had kept Fremantle in the game early but the season appeared to be slipping away by half time. A bit of a fight back just before three quarter time had the Dockers in striking distance but Carlton kicked a couple of early ones in the last, shut the gate and Fremantle couldn't get any closer than 30 points in the end.

Michael Barlow was back in the thick of things with 32 touches and Matthew Pavlich was still toiling away in the midfield with 28. Chris Judd and Marc Murphy had the most of the footy for Carlton. Hayden Ballantyne, Aaron Sandilands and Ryan Crowley all managed a couple of goals for the Dockers while the Blues went through Eddie Betts who kicked 6 (coincidentally the number of sizes his shorts are too big). Ballantyne, Michael Johnson and Alex Silvagni picked up the Clinton Wolf Medal votes in controversial circumstances. Judd showed up so he was given three Brownlow votes, Betts and Marc Murphy were lucky enough to get his scraps.

The win was unusual for Carlton, particularly because it was at Subiaco Oval. Fremantle had rolled them at Subiaco a year earlier.  It was a controversial win for Fremantle because they had dared to use some sort of strategic thinking the week before when they decided to rest some of their more talented players rather than cram them into a tin can for 10 hours travelling to some God forsaken island off the coast of Victoria.

The plan worked a treat with Fremantle returning to the stellar form they had displayed earlier that year and cruising to a 6 point win over the Blues. Carlton had arrived well regarded  by some as a finals chance but were quickly downgraded to ‘making up the numbers’ as Fremantle broke their game plan apart and exposed them away from the easily floodable Eddie’s Hat Stadium.  Stephen Hill and Matthew Pavlich were both impressive with 25 touches and a couple of goals each. Marc Murphy and Chris Judd had 30 touches each with 1 goal between them. Jeff Garlett kicked 3. The Clinton Wolf Medal was shrouded in controversy when Chris Judd wasn’t left out of the voting with the top three going to Stephen Hill, Aaron Sandilands and Michael Johnson. Judd still managed a vote in the Brownlow but was relegated to the 1, with Sandilands and Gibbs taking the 3 and 2.

Over all Fremantle have the goods on the Blues, with 14 wins from the 25 matches the sides have played against each other and 11 of the past 15 games.  In the past decade years, Carlton have only managed 4 wins at Subiaco Oval, 2 against Fremantle.

Last week the Blues came up against the Bombers in what was expected to be a comfortable win for them. They lost by 5 goals. The lead up to that match had all pretty much been easy beats, with early wins over Richmond, Brisbane and then Collingwood. The percentage boosts from those matches has kept them as high as 4th spot on the ladder.

Fremantle are also on 3 wins and 1 loss, although the calibre of their opponents has been much higher. Last week they rolled the very highly fancied St Kilda, at Etihad, which followed up strong wins against reigning premiers Geelong and the very well regard Brisbane with a loss to the undefeated Swans. They are currently one win from top spot.
