For Geelong, 2012 has come around quickly. They won a flag, did some laps of Geelong with it, got back to training and there they were, playing NAB Cup games. For Fremantle it's been on the way since last June.  They sacked a coach, tried to change a song, watched Roger Hayden’s hair become as elusive as he out of a back pocket and have had so many Toblerones sent to hospitalised players that they’ve had to call in an Egyptian architect just to help store them. 2012 has been a long, long time coming.

Fremantle last saw the Cats in Round 2 last year in what was being dubbed as a potential Grand Final Preview and a race to the top of the ladder. While those predictions turned out to only be half right, the game itself didn’t disappoint.

What did disappoint, however, was Fremantle’s performance in front of goals, kicking 10.18 (78) to the Cats’ 13.11 (89) including a two goal six behind last quarter performance. Davidy Mundy was sensational as he dug deep, for what he thought was going to be a couple of weeks of covering for injured players, and picked up 29 touches and a handy goal. Old Man Ling cobbled together a similar amount of possessions for Geelong, although most were cheap ones out on the wing. Kepler Bradley kicked 3 goals for Fremantle, Hayden Ballantyne 2 while the Cats got their goals from Daniel Menzel and Travis Varcoe. The Brownlow votes went to Steve Johnson, Joel Corey and Stephen Hill while the Clinton Wolf Medal Votes were less controversial than usual, going to Mundy, Hill and Hayden Ballantyne.

What made the lead up to the Round 2, 2011 clash so big was that the previous time the two sides met was in September. Yep, September. It was at the MCG, under lights on a Friday evening in front of 45,000 people. Exciting as that sounds, it was all over before Michael Schultz had finished giving out the Channel 10  weather report.

Fremantle’s one legged ruckman was leaning so far to the right, Tony Abbot offered him a spot in the Shadow Cabinet, Des Headland was retired from football a minute into the game and vibrant bodies that had thrilled everyone a week earlier against the Hawks looked like they wanted nothing more than an Epsom salts bath and a gramophone to play their Harry Secombe records. Geelong took a very early lead, kicking 8 goals to 1 in the opening quarter and the game was all but done. Freo lifted their game after the shaky start but the best they could do was to break even, before Geelong broke them in the last quarter, winning by 69 points and putting a severe dent in Fremantle's chances of winning the flag.

David Mundy shone with 30 possessions while Jimmy Bartel racked up 35 or so cheap stats for the Cats. Michael Walters stamped his name on the Big Game Players file with 3 goals and Pav added an extra smiley face next to his name in the same file, with 4 goals. Steve Johnson, Mathew Stokes and James Podsiadly all kicked 3 for the Cats. Clinton Wolf Medal Votes went to Michael Walters, Michael Johnson and Roger Hayden in what may have been controversial circumstances had anyone cared about football at that point.

It was a disspointing end to the year, particularly considering the highlight of the 2010 season had been the Fremantle v Geelong game from Round 3. It was round 3, Subiaco Oval, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in April. It was a great game of football. The sort of thing you usually only hear about in folk songs. Fremantle up against the reigning premiers and three umpires, one of whom had his dog run over by Des Headland, the other had his daughter rejected by Matthew Pavlich and the third was just a bastard. The odds were insurmountable, well, $2.50 actually, but Fremantle overcame them. They smashed Geelong at every chance, they danced, they dazzled, they booted goal after goal and in the last quarter they held their nerve, pushed ahead and made the best look ordinary, winning by 7 points.

Pavlich was in full flight with 5 goals and 26 disposals, each more devestaing and brilliant than the last. Paul Duffield and Stephen Hill had a bit of the ball. For Geelong, Gary Ablett had 33 touches and kicked 4 goals. He’s now captain of the Gold Coast. Controversially, Duffield edged out Pavlich for top votes in the Clinton Wolf Medal but Stephen Hill’s 1 vote was universally accepted as apt.

It was a game that most thought was a turning point for the Fremantle Football Club, a good turning point. A year earlier, Fremantle’s fortunes had been less interesting. It was Round 22, Fremantle’s season was over, half the side were out for operations and Geelong were playing up for their home crowd before they’d go on to win the flag. So the Dockers didn't go to Geelong expecting to beat the home side but they did run out to make sure Geelong had to earn every single goal they beat Fremantle by. In an impressive defensive effort, the Dockers threw everything they had left at Geelong and put the clamps on what was expected to be a siren to siren route but eventually Fremantle's lack of scoreboard pressure and Geelong's ability, saw the margin creep out so Geelong could wrap the game up well before closing time. Freo fought it out to the end to keep the game respectable but not respectable enough not to give them some things to keep them motivated summer 14.10 (94) to 8.6 (54).

Darren Milburn had 36 disposals for the Cats, Gary Ablett's kid had 35. The best Fremantle could organise was 19 touches from Matthew Pavlich. They didn't do much better with the goals, having 8 individual scorers. Tom Hawkins managed 3 for Geelong.

Geelong have beaten Fremantle in 4 of the last 5 games the two sides have played, and in 20 of the 27 matches overall but over the last few years, the early round match against Geelong, at Subiaco Oval has always been a good’n.  Geelong win by 11 points in Round 2, 2011; Fremantle won by 7 points in Round 3, 2010; and Geelong won by a point in Round 6, 2008.

Neither team took to the pre-season too seriously this year with Geelong having wins over Sydney, Gold Coast and the Bulldogs and losses to St Kilda and Richmond and Fremantle beating the Tigers and the Bombers but losing to Port Adelaide, Hawthorn and another game.

Both sides are currently equal 3rd on the ladder with Fremantle ahead slightly on alphabet.
